The name means : enamelled
earthenware tile. It was the 16th century that elevated
decorated tiles to the rank of art in Portugal. Myriad designs
and mythological or religious scenes were then reproduced
on these tiles that, laid into panels, provide lavish interior
and exterior decoration.
The picture
: polychrome glazed ceramics from an altar facing,
Lisbon, Portugal, late 17th century.
The perfume
: this fragrance has touches of aquatic coolness, recalling
the importance of the sea in the history of Portugal, the
birthplace of so many great navigators. Rich first with the
fresh, fruity notes of melon and blackcurrant combined with
tender orange blossom ; it then displays an airy floral heart
; before revealing a woodsy, musky, powdery basis.
